near Escalante this is a photographic highlight!

In September I last visited this canyon with 7 photo friends from top to bottom.
For this we ranked with 2 cars - start and end.

It was a great hike through a varied canyon with several slot canyons in it.
All in all it was 7 mi with only 400 ft altitude difference.

This goblin stands at Hwy.12 opposite Milepost 70,
only 150 feet into the terrain!
Best photo time in the afternoon!

The trail from top to bottom

From Escalante Hwy. 12 approx. 10 mi towards Boulder.
Directly after milepost 70, in front of a "Cattle Guard", a dirt road turns right:
The Old Sheffield Road.

Follow this road windingly through the rocks.
After approx. 3 miles you will see a large
Rock formation that I would call a castle:

The trail from top to bottom

The canyon begins to the right of this “Castle”.
GPS: N 37°43'00,0" W 111°25'25,1"

It leads about 4.5mi down to Harris Wash and includes spectacular rock forms
as well as several slot canyons.

You will not meet a person all day.

To the Slot Canyon:

At GPS: N37°40'32,9" - W111°27'13,6" we turn right
and follow this narrow canyon until it becomes Slot Canyon after 800 feet.
We walk another 600 feet to the end of the Slot Canyon.

Than we'll go back and go out of the slot at:
N37°40'41,1" - W111°27'26,0", than  over the saddle
to Harris Wash, witch we will find at  N37°40'35,0" - W111°27'36,3"

If you don't want to walk all the way back,
you must first place a car on the Hole In The Rock Road:

From Escalante 5 mi Hwy. 12 direction Boulder.
Turn right onto Hole In The Rock Road.
After 4.4 mi (at the end of the Wash crossing), 100 ft before the road climbs again
GPS: N37°40'39,7" - W111°28'57,7" can be easily parked.
